QOTD: "Based on the size of its unfunded pension liabilities, Chicago is in the worst shape, with more than $62 billion worth of unfunded pension promises. Chicago has less than 33 cents set aside for every dollar promised.

The Chicago Municipal Employees plan is estimated to run out of assets in seven years, since it is only 20.3 percent funded. The police fund (funded at 25.4 percent) and the firefighter's fund (funded at 21.7 percent) will not be far behind. The Public School Teachers' Pension and Retirement Fund is in slightly better shape with 51.6 percent funding...

...At another extreme, Portland, Ore., has set aside less than 1 percent of what it needs to pay its $2.9 billion of pension promises." --Terry Savage

Weird Fat Kid Threatens to Destroy USS Carl Vinson With Intercounty Ballistic Jarts, Clackers and Skydancers

Remember when the Clinton administration proclaimed success in keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of North Korea's inbred criminal family?

Yeah, those were good times. Good times.

Anyhow, the 21st century's most flatulent world leader is pounding his pots and pans, trying to get attention and scare anyone within listening distance.

Given its track record of missile launch failures, NoKo may have to resort to intercounty ballistic Jarts and Atomic Wrist Rockets.

THE DEPARTMENT OF OBVIOUS: Bernie "Venezuela" Sanders Says "The Democratic Party is Failing"

The socialist from Vermont and former Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sandersappeared on today CBS News' Deface the Nation (hat tip: Mark Levin).

As anyone could have predicted, he was not asked about the tragic and violent meltdown of Venezuelan society, another victim of socialism's perfect track record.

He was asked about the current fractures in a party best known for cobbling together various groups of grievance-mongers, government dependents, illegal aliens, the mathematically challenged and the ultra-wealthy.

Stunningly, this political Tower of Babel hasn't led to widespread electoral success.

Let's let Sanders tell it:

QOTD: "During Russia’s hacking campaign against the United States, intelligence agencies could peer, at times, into Russian networks and see what had been taken. Early last year, F.B.I. agents received a batch of hacked documents, and one caught their attention.

The document, which has been described as both a memo and an email, was written by a Democratic operative who expressed confidence that Ms. Lynch would keep the Clinton investigation from going too far, according to several former officials familiar with the document…

If Ms. Lynch announced that the case was closed, and Russia leaked the document, Mr. Comey believed it would raise doubts about the independence of the investigation." --The New York Times

SOCIALIST UTOPIA VENEZUELA: On the Verge of Complete Revolution

By James Holbrooks

Venezuela, a country with only $10 billion left in reserves to run on, is in trouble. The people are starving. The government has gone full-on authoritarian, and now desperate human beings are dying in the streets.

From an Associated Press report on Friday:

“Authorities in Venezuela say 12 people were killed overnight following looting and violence in the South American nation’s capital amid a spiraling political crisis.”

Continuing, the report further highlighted the gravity of the situation:

The 7 Most Heinous Crimes of the Obama DOJ

Writing at National Review, former federal prosecutor Andy McCarthy outlines the machinations of the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) against alleged insider trading. Led by the controversial Preet Bharara -- since fired by President Trump -- the office has been pilloried in the media for its tactics.

As McCarthy notes, there is general concern that "improper and abusive behavior by prosecutors has reached 'epidemic proportions'."

However, that's not the worst of it.

McCarthy lists seven high crimes and misdeameanors of the Obama DOJ that are worth remembering.

EXPOSED: The Left-Wing Media's Plot to Take Down the Trump Administration

By Roger Aronoff

The progressive media, and their left-wing allies, have been on an endless binge of Trump-bashing that began even before Donald Trump took office as president. This Trump derangement syndrome results from the fact that during the campaign, and later when he was elected, Trump took firm hold of the national debate and reshaped it in his image. But progressives have their own dueling national narrative, one which they are trying to reassert through the use of allegations of Russian collusion and through a war on "fake news."

BOMBSHELL: Obama CIA Head John Brennan Conspired With Foreign Spies to Interfere with 2016 Election

By Matthew Vadum

Although Russians may have aspired to influence the November election, the real election meddlers were Democrats in the Obama administration who conspired with foreign intelligence agencies against Donald Trump’s campaign, new media reports suggest.

The key player, we are learning, is the already infamous John O. Brennan but FBI Director James Comey also played a role. From January 2009 to March 2013, Brennan was Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, and then Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from March 2013 until Obama’s last day as president.

George Neumayr explains at the American Spectator how pro-Islam, pro-Communist Brennan appears to have masterminded the operation.

FAILED OBAMA LACKEY: It’s Quite Troubling President Trump Hasn’t Embraced "Smart Power"

By William Teach

Apparently, leading from behind is passe’:

The risks of the Trump administration hollowing out American leadership

On the surface, much of President Trump’s foreign policy seems to be reverting to the mainstream upon first contact with reality. Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s horrific use of chemical weapons produced a quick military response, applauded across partisan lines in Washington. Relations with Russia have settled to predictably adversarial depths. The administration is full of appropriately reassuring words about NATO, and the one-China policy was safely back in place for the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Senior national security appointments have been mostly traditionalist, with radical voices in retreat. In a Washington always impatient for sweeping judgments as a new administration wraps up its first 100 days, it is tempting to conclude that convention is ascendant.

Beneath the surface, however, lurk more troubling trend lines. Through policy incoherence and not-so-benign neglect, the Trump team risks hollowing out the ideas, initiative and institutions on which U.S. leadership and international order rest.

JAW-DROPPING: Coal's Colossal Comeback

By Stephen Moore

Buried in an otherwise-humdrum jobs report was the jaw-dropping pronouncement by the Department of Labor that mining jobs in America were up by 11,000 in March. Since the low point in October 2016, and following years of painful layoffs in the mining industry, the mining sector has added 35,000 jobs.

What a turnaround. Liberals have been saying that Donald Trump was lying to the American people when he said that he could bring coal jobs back. Well, so far, he has delivered on his promise.

There's more good news for the coal industry.

GRIM MILESTONE: New York Attorney General Orders Cities to... Break Federal Law

By Judicial Watch

Weeks after the chief law enforcement official in New York State issued “legal guidance” to help municipalities provide sanctuary for illegal immigrants, nearly a dozen have followed through with the attorney general’s order to skirt federal law. The goal, according to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, is to provide local governments with a tool to “protect their immigrant communities, regardless of new federal enforcement practices.” Those that have followed Schneiderman’s directive range from sleepy towns like Newburgh to larger cities such as Rochester as well as Albany, the state capital.

QOTD: "The fundamental problem is not Turkish democracy, but Turkish demography. Whether or not demography is always destiny, it certainly is in a democratic age. You can have a functioning democracy in a relatively homogeneous society in which parties compete over tax policy and health care. But, when a nation is divided into two groups with fundamentally opposing views of what that society is or should be, then democracy becomes tribal, and the size of the tribe determines the outcome." --Mark Steyn
